God is at work in Iran

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

The persecuted church in Iran is an important issue, as Christianity in Iran is considered a religion outside the dominant Islamic tradition. Iran is officially an Islamic republic, and the government only recognizes Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Christianity to a limited extent as recognized religions. However, Christianity is under pressure, especially for those who have converted from Islam to Christianity.

Persecution of Christians in Iran:

Christians who convert to Christianity, especially from Muslim families, risk arrest, imprisonment, torture or even execution. Islamic authorities regard converts as apostates and may accuse them of "spreading false beliefs" or "anti-revolutionary behavior. Although Iran's constitution offers Christians protection in theory, in practice they are often harassed.

The authorities mainly target house churches (small Christian communities that gather in private homes or apartments). These churches are often targets of arrest, as the government fears the spread of Christianity outside the official churches under strict control.

Recognition of Christians:

There are some recognized Christian communities in Iran, such as the Armenian and Assyrian Christians, who can reasonably practice their faith within the limits imposed on them by Islamic law. For example, they are allowed to participate in church services, but they are restricted in their activities, such as sending missionary outreach or evangelism to other Muslims. Despite the dangers, these believers remain steadfast in their faith and maintain their churches.

THE WORKSHOP:

Encouragement: Persecuted Christians experience tremendous encouragement when they know that they are being thought of and prayed for in other countries.

Supporting house churches: We support several small house churches of Iranian Christians. This means that we (partially) pay for the needs of the pastor. The new believers, who are almost always from a different religious background, receive education and training in these congregations. For this purpose, we make (digital) reading materials available through our reading project. We also enable congregation members to provide diaconal assistance to those around them. This creates openings to share something of the Gospel.
